everal local bands drew a modest crowd of very young-looking drinkers for a show at Live Trax in Bellmore on April 14. In fact, the whole night was a flashback to high school, the dark room pulsating with ska and funk tunes.

The first band to perform was Drop it Jeffery, a seven-person ska band. Their music was excellent but overpowering. The lyrics were impossible to follow because the singer was drowned out by the two trombone players standing next to him. They did a lot of original stuff, with the melody supplied by the brass instruments reminiscent of Reel Big Fish and Mighty Mighty Bosstones. Their stage presence wasn't too strong; the lead singer Evan O'Donnovan was the only person really moving around and he came off more like a pop star than a ska musician.

Hyjinx was next, with their music more influenced by funk than ska. You could hear some of their influences, Reel Big Fish, Bob Marley, Dave Matthews Band and Maroon 5 for starters. They had a strong stage presence; all the guys were dancing regardless of what cumbersome instrument they were carrying. They projected serious potential but their performance at times was more suitable for a frat party at its zenith: very playful, very loud and with their exuberance compromising their sound at times. Overall, though, they gave a great performance.

The final performance was Tribeus, a "three piece band" that was formed by three friends who grew up in Westbury LI. Originally HalfSnatch, a garage punk band that evolved into a more funk/rock/jam sound, they changed their name to Tribeus in 2005. Their music is a cross between Incubus and 311. Unfortunately a large portion of the audience had left after the first two bands, but they had some loyal fans their enjoying their sound.
