The first part of The Dark Third could easily and effectively serve as a soundtrack to a mythical adventure film. The second half shares qualities of bands such as Yes and Rush, where harmonic vocals stand out amidst the guitars and percussion.
Among this listener's favorites from The Dark Third: Aeropause, Goshen's Remain and The Bright Ambassadors. Aeropause is a five-minute instrumental, including some great piano portions, that starts this album and sets the mood rather nicely. Goshen's Remain contains a good mix of guitars, drums, and vocals. The majority of the vocals come from a beautiful female voice that sounds like Enya. On the final minute and a half of Goshen's Remain, a male voice joins in to create a perfect harmony. The Bright Ambassadors, epic in length, could easily be three songs, but still works well as one. An outer space-sounding instrumental beginning, dreamy vocals as the meat and classic guitar rock make up this 12-minute composition.
Pure Reason Revolution's The Dark Third is a very well-crafted album that is quite moving at times. It's a solid accomplishment for Pure Reason Revolution.
