Bayside
By Tiffany Razzano
Bayside played their 1000th show at the Crazy Donkey in Farmingdale on Aug. 25. The show was part of a five-date, mini-tour with Valencia, This is Hell and Spitalfield.
Valencia kicked off the gig; the audience seeming to know most of their songs. The group was very energetic, playing a more complicated brand than your standard emo and pop-punk. The lead vocalist, with clear, unwavering vocals, really got the audience moving.
Hardcore outfit This is Hell, from Trustkill Records, went on next, kicking off with the tune Absence of God. Formed out of the ashes of Long Island hardcore bands The Back-Up Plan and Scraps and Heart Attacks, the group was a huge hit with the audience, who seemed to know the group well.
Chicago's Spitalfield, Bayside's label-mate at Victory, was up next. Mixing screamo with catchy and melodic pop-punk, the band announced the departure of guitarist Dan Lowder from the group, and said they had a friend filling in for him. This didn't affect the band's energetic rock or the audience's reaction to their set.
Bayside went on last, playing an amazing and energized set to celebrate their 1000th show. In fact, many of the band's friends from the local scene, including The Sleeping, Endwell, Bedlight for Blue Eyes, Deciding Tonight and November Kills, were in attendance to help the group celebrate the milestone.
After their first song of the night, vocalist Anthony Raneri announced, "We're Bayside; we're from here." Close to the end of the show, he told the audience, "This is our 1000th show. Thank you guys so fucking much. I remember our first show. We probably had [less than] five people there."
With a record called The Walking Wounded due out in February, the group played a good mix of new and old songs, including the song Megan, off their 2006 acoustic record, and They Look Like Strong Hands, originally off their self-titled CD. Newer songs included an untitled track and Loveless Wrists. They came back out and played Don't Call Me Peanut as their encore before ending with Dear Tragedy, as they were joined on stage by The Sleeping's guitarist, Cameron Keym, as well as members from all of the other bands that played that night.
