Lies Beneath Strikes The Right Chord
Metal Band on the Rise
By Dagmar Fors Karppi
The heavy metal band Lies Beneath has struck the right chords. They are a blending of two groups, Skyril and 44 Cal. The result is a band that, while it follows in the tradition of Metallica, Slip Knot, Chimaria, Slayer and Lamb of God, plays only its own music.
The band speaks to their generation with all the angst, thunder and lightening that young people bring to their work. It encourages them to think about the issues their generation faces as well as taking on the views of past generations.
They have been getting some positive attention. They were the 2006 runner-up in the Emergenza contest held at the Knitting Factory in New York City.
The group uses the lyrics of Ben Serr and Jared Zipes. The sound is a mix of Zipes on lead guitar, lead singer and back up guitarist Serr, drummer Andrew Czegledi, bassist Steve Inoshima, and the addition of sampler Glen Staff's sound effects and eerie background noises.
"We are real good friends and have been playing together as Lies Beneath for a year and a half, appearing at hundreds of shows in clubs and bars all over Long Island and the in city," said a band spokesperson recently. Most of the band members are attending college and believe in hard work to reach their goals.
The focus of their songs is taking on the views of society and religion. "For example, the song 'Unfaithful' is about people who have nothing to live for and are on the edge of insanity," said a band member. Driven by historical events, they incorporate the emotion and underlying themes with a powerful aggressive in-your-face stance that still remains "mysterious and with a hidden theme. We want them to decipher it themselves and get their own view of the world," he said.
At concerts the band sells T-shirts and their just-released CD. You can catch their next concert date by checking them out on MySpace.com. Their website summarizes their "thrash/death metal" group with the following quote: "Lies Beneath - centered in Carle Place, NY - Thrash/Death Metal - was formed in September of 2005. [The] constant focus on what drives us is what allows us to deliver the material that truly comes from within us. Our debut CD, The Eidolon, was released on January 24. [It] contains eight tracks that were in writing from the day Lies Beneath was formed. Writing is currently in process for the next album while we are concentrating on an east coast summer tour in '07."
