Perpetual Toxins' Summer Picks
By Tiffany Razzano
Summer's here and that means tons of concerts, festivals, fairs and other fun events. And we know how difficult and overwhelming it can be to wade through those overly detailed summer calendars put out by other publications and how annoying it can be to keep having to check the schedules of your favorite venues. So we decided we'd provide you with a list of the essential summer events that you shouldn't miss.
June 6-8
Nautical Mile Festival
Nautical Mile, Freeport
Noon to 10 p.m.
Enjoy local vendors, live music, seafood and drinks at this annual festival.

Stephen Talkhouse, Amagansett
8 p.m.
Do you like American music? Because we like American music. Gano, lead singer of the iconic alt-rockers Violent Femmes, has teamed up with the Ryan Brothers, formerly of the Bogmen. Stephen Talkhouse is also a great, intimate venue.
June 13-15
Strawberry Festival & County Fair
Mattituck
Maybe it's lame, but I'm a sucker for anything that combines strawberries, zeppoles, beer, carnival rides and the outdoors.
June 14
R.E.M., Modest Mouse, The National

June 20
Emmylou Harris
Planting Fields Arboretum, Oyster Bay
9 p.m.
This silver-haired country songstress is performing as part of the Friends of the Planting Fields summer series. Click here to purchase tickets.
June 21
Punk Island
Governor's Island, off Battery Park in NYC
All Day
This is a pretty neat concept. As part of Make Music New York!, which will feature bands performing across the five boroughs, Punk Island will focus on mostly punk and rock acts. The line-up hasn't been released yet, but the show's organizers promise both professional as well as local, amateur groups. The show is free, as is the ferry that will get you to Governor's Island. And bands will be playing on the ferry all day long as well.
 Beth Orton. |
July 3
Beth Orton
Stephen Talkhouse, Amagansett
This well-known British singer-songwriter comes to the East End and will hit up the Prospect Park Bandshell in Brooklyn on July 12.
July 11-13
Great South Bay Music Festival
Shorefront Park, Patchogue
All Day
This festival mixes the well-known (Mickey Hart, Blue Oyster Cult) with the locals (Miles to Dayton, Camera-Head Shark). It also mixes up the genres, bringing in rock, folk and blues acts. This three-day festival is also very affordable and family-friendly.
July 19
Siren Ferstival
Coney Island
Though you may have had a hard time hearing them, some great acts have played among the aging carnival rides of Coney Island over the years. This year's line-up is no different - Stephen Malmus and the Jicks, Broken Social Scene and Helio Sequence are among the indie rock bands playing, with more to be announced. And this is likely your last year to catch the festival, since Coney Island will be receiving a facelift at the end of the summer when Astroland closes officially forever.
July 26
Warped Tour
Nassau Coliseum, Uniondale
Noon
Hot topic shoppers across Long Island have probably had this festival marked on their calendars for months. This year, Say Anything, Against Me! And Bouncing Souls headline, and look to see what local acts are added to the show, as a handful of Long Island acts usually find their way on the line-up. Click here to purchase tickets.
July 31
Hippiefest
Westbury Theatre
8 p.m.
You might think this is something more in tune with what your parents want to see, but ignoring all the other bands on the line-up, Eric Burdon and the Animals alone is worth the trip to Westbury. Click here to purchase tickets.
August 8-10
Metro NY Balloon & Music Festival
Brookhaven
The line-up has yet to be released, but in the past this festival has boasted acts like Joan Jett and Pat Benatar.
All Points West
Liberty State Park, Jersey City, NJ
A Coachella for the east coast, this festival will feature Radiohead, the New Pornographers, Cat Power, Andrew Bird, the Secret Machines and many, many, many more.
August 9
North Fork Craft Beer BBQ and Wine Festival
Martha Clara Vineyards, Jamesport
Mmm ... beer. This festival will feature over 50 brewers and more than 120 different brews. And while you're there, enjoy BBQ, wine, music and the beautiful North Fork.
